Results of the Irish Shore Team Fish-Offs 2012 held in Connaught. The event was an extraordinary success.

"On behalf of Tom Lillis, Frank Baxter and myself I would like to thank the Connaught Provincial Council for the great effort they put in to make this competition a great success. The amount of effort they put in over the last few weeks checking out the beaches certainly paid off. Mike Curtin, Peter Atkins and their team of stewards did an excellent job and made sure that the event went off without a hitch. I would also like to thank Boris Siegel the Connaught Recorder for his help with the results. Overall it was a great success. The 2012 World Shore team representing Ireland in Holland is, Martin Howlin (Captain), John O'Brien, Eugene Farrelly, Joe Duggan, David Roe and Derek Kenrick (Sub)."

What a super team. We wish them the best of angling in Holland later this year.

Best of luck to all competitors in this weekend's Master Angler Shore event in Connaught. The conditions look poor but a lot of work has gone into selecting the correct venues depending on the prevaling weather. Expect flounder, turbot and dogs.

Ulster Open Gold Medal Shore 2012 & Joe Mullen Perpetuel Trophy will be held 8/1/2012 in Benone Beach, fishing from 12 - 5pm. Penn points are available. Entry fee £15 seniors, £10 juniors including pool.Mimimum size 18 cm with no undersized fish. Completed entry form with fees to Ulster Secretary Paul Divito - address in Diary. Pre-entry only. Closing date for entries 6th JANUARY 2012.

News of the October Shore Angling Festival that Menapia SAC are holding on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th October 2011. The competitions will be fished at two different types of venues in County Wexford, its south coast beach fishing at Carne-Cut of the Lake on the Saturday night and then estuary fishing in Wexford Harbour on the Sunday. The Simon Anglim Trophy will be fished for as part of the competition in Wexford Harbour on the Sunday. All are welcome. Further details available at www.menapiasac.com.

Another International Medal for Ireland. Congratulations to Paul Noble for winning a bronze medal at the World Casting Games in Italy 2011. This was the first year IFSA had sent a team to the World Championships. In the boat and shore events, Ireland finished 8th and 9th respectively.

VOTE FOR THE IRISH SHORE ANGLING TEAM MEMBERS AS THE SPORTSTAR OF THE YEAR

The Irish Independant newspaper are running a readers competition to select the Irish Sports Star of 2010. IFSA is encouraging all members to submit one or several entries via the form in the paper, nominating members of the World Championship winning team. Closing date for the competition is 12/Jan/2011. Team members are JP Molloy (captain), John O'Brien, Timmy O'Sullivan, Derek Kenrick, Mark Beatty, Brendan Wall and Manager Tom Lillis.

"Probably the greatest week in Irish Shore Angling history."
This thought echoed through Irish sea angling circles all weekend.
Ireland are the new World Shore champions, winning gold in South Africa fishing against the most famous names in the game. Congratulaions to the team : JP Molloy, John O Brien, Timmy O Sullivan, Derek Kenrick, Mark Beatty, Brendan Wall and team Manager Tom Lillis on a superb team victory.

As well as the team gold, John O Brien took the individual silver medal and Timmy O Sullivan finished fourth overall.

The preparation, dedication and ability to perform under the most intense of pressure is testimony to the quality of the anglers involved.

They are a credit to themselves, the federation and their country. Make way for some new famous names. Well done to all.

The team are arriving back in Ireland wednesday morning, planned to land in COrk Airport at 11.10 am. The IFSA would ask that any member who can make it to the airport do so to welcome back our World Champions.

Sharks Skates and Rays of Northern Ireland, Walter Crozier, Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute, Wednesday 3rd November 1-2pm, Ulster Museum Lecture Theatre Northern Ireland waters contain a wide variety of sharks, skates and rays, representing an important part of our marine biodiversity. The slow growth rates, late maturity and small litter characteristics of many elasmobranchs render them among the most vulnerable marine fish. This talk presents the findings of a recent AFBI project on the status of these vulnerable species in Northern Ireland. This is the third talk in the ‘Life in Northern Ireland’s Coastal Waters’ lecture series. These lunchtime talks will explore aspects of the surprisingly diverse marine life that flourishes around the coasts of Northern Ireland. 06/10/2010Vera Prendergast, widow of late IFSA President Brian Prendergast, passed away today.

"It is with much sadness I have to inform you that Vera Prendergast, widow of our late President Brian, passed away peacefully early today in hospital in Dublin. This followed a recent illness.A formidable and charming character in her own right Vera was a lifelong member of the Garda Siochana Sea Angling Club where she enjoyed her fishing alongside Brian and their many sea angling friends. We are aware that Vera has not enjoyed full health in recent years but battled bravely to make the best of her situation, and indeed was an inspiration to us all in coping with her illness. Full details of the funeral arrangements can be viewed in the Irish Independent in due course. A Wreath and Mass Card will be sent to the family as a mark of respect from the Membership of the IFSA. May Vera Prendergast Rest In Peace."

30.05.2010 IRISH TEAM WINS GOLD IN THE HOME NATIONS BOAT COMPETITION MAY 2010

The Irish Boat team won this year's Home Nations Boat event fished from Belmullet in Broadhaven Bay from May 20th - 22nd.

Mary Gavin Hughes, the Irish captain, was unable to fish due to an unfortunate accident. Shave Gilvary, deputy captain, stepped in and led the Irish team to victory. The other membres of the successful team were Liam O Callaghan, Josie Barrett, Liam Longmore and Henry Ross. Despite the accident, Mary was present throughout the event and lent her support and valuable experience to the team.

The team was managed by Connaught Chairman Pat Walsh. Pat said

"This team did Team Ireland and myself proud. Congratulations one and all. I am proud and privileged to have been manager of such an excellent team.

In all my years serving as team manager, this was the best team work and co-operation I have seen, which as Mary Gavin Hughes said proves there is no I in the word team! I remember the words of Graheme Foote on the pier on the Saturday morning "Do it for Ireland" and the team did just that. My thanks to one and all from a very proud and happy Manager of Team Ireland.

My thanks to Eamon O Duibhir for acting as Chairman for the occasion and welcoming all at the opening and closing dinners. Also to Pat Ruddy Chairman Belmullet SAC Hon. Sec. Kevin Walsh, Tony Lally, and Buddy Valkenburg Vice President CPC. The club did the Federation proud.

The Broadway Bay Hotel was of the highest standard and cannot be faulted in any way, the Manager Dave Tyrell and the staff could not do enough for the teams partaking and I know they were all very impressed by the high standard of service and cuisine.

The stewards for the two days who did a superb job were Grahame Blair chief steward, Kit Dunne, Martin Kennedy, Sylvie Sweeney, Pat Ruddy, and Tom Lillis who stepped into the breach on short notice.

69 Senior and 7 Juniors braved Arctic conditions to fish the comp on Sunday 10th Jan at Benone Beach. With an icy Easterly Wind blowing fishing was not great. A total of 53 fish were caught by 29 anglers - 24 Clubs were represented.

30.09.2009 Heiko Dreier wins the IFSA Master Angler Boat Competition 2009 for the fifth time in seven years. Heiko won the Master Boat competition in Kilmore Quay last weekend. Fishing was done under World championship conditions i.e. all boats at anchor and all bait provided. Main species caught were wrasse, pollock and pouting and they showed in big numbers. A trigger fish was landed on the Saturday event. Heiko had a maximum score over the two days, winning all four sessions. Pio Enright also scored a maximum and was beaten only on a count back of fish. Five of last years Irish world team ended up in the top six of this year showing the consistency required at the top match anglers level. The top ten anglers from the masters will go forward into the fish-offs for the Irish boat team for 2010. Full results.

25.09.2009 IFSA members, Eamonn Fogarty and Paul Whelan of Raheny SAC won the Daiwa Pairs event in Kerry last week against a field full of top anglers, also finishing second and third in the individual event. Eamonn is the coach for the IFSA junior teams and coached Paul as a member of several teams, obviously teaching him well. Fishing was mainly for dogs and flounder with the usual Kerry mix of painted ray, bass and pollock. The best wrasse taken over the specimen days was estimated to be close to 8lb. This is the 28th year of the Daiwa pairs,and Eamonn and Paul are the third Irish pair to win the coveted award, following in the footsteps of Eoghan Duff and Patrick Forrester and Mick Dixon and Tony Byrne. 22.06.2008Bray Outcasts Leinster league boat competition has been re-scheduled to 3 Aug 2008. The original event was cancelled due to bad weather.
The Inter Provincial youths for 2009 will be run in the Wexford area on the 17th and 18th January. Get planning now !.
Any under 16 anglers who wish to compete in the Leinster Youths league should contact their council youth officer before august 2008.
The Jimmy Smith competition for 2009 has been rescheduled to 17th October 2009 due to a clash. Venue will be Benone area. This years competition will be held in Connaught on October 4th. Probable venue is Gurteen Bay.
Good luck to the home international boat and shore teams who travel to UK in July. The shore event will be held in Samphire Hoe Devon with the boat in Milford Haven Wales.
